"Friday 12 December marked the launch exhibition for the Men’s Life Drawing Group at Nolia’s Gallery in Southwark. The event allowed professional male artists (predominantly gay and bi) to exhibit alongside talented artists whose main profession wasn’t Fine Arts-related but whose keen eye and talent for life drawing compelled them to seek other like-minded artists to further their practice in a semi-social way. The exhibition’s title, Nude for Thought, posed questions such as: ‘Does looking at a poster advert of a man in bulging briefs, or in some cases completely naked, make it a gay poster if seen by a gay man?’ Statues of heroic figures line London’s streets and museums, but with barely a fig leaf for modesty. What makes the difference between artistic and historical statuary and homoerotica? And can the full-frontal male nude be art?"
